Biography
Born in Peterborough in 1946, Ken Burton was initially trained in design and engraving, and began painting in ink and wash at an early age.
Being influenced by the Victorian watercolours of female artists such as Helen Allingham, and her sister, Caroline Paterson, he soon developed his own style and began painting City and village scenes, almost exclusively in watercolour.
In 1989 he became a full time artist, working as a self employed watercolour artist, and illustrator. In the early nineties, two limited edition books were published, each containing 30 full size prints of his watercolours, the first being of scenes from the county of Worcestershire, and the second, of Gloucestershire. These were followed by a series of limited edition prints, entitled ‘The Counties of Great Britain’. Over 400 scenes were published over several years ,from watercolours, after visiting almost all the counties in Britain. These prints, and his original watercolours were at that time exhibited in numerous galleries across the UK and abroad.
In recent years Ken has been painting in acrylic, on canvas, and while not fully abandoning watercolour, the great majority of his work is now in acrylic, a slightly looser style when compared to his earlier detailed paintings.
Still painting regularly, now living in Lincolnshire, close to the borders of Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, the majority of his work is based on the coast and countryside close to the areas in the vicinity of the galleries that exhibit his work in North Norfolk, The Peak District, Yorkshire, and East Anglia.
